This version adds support for games with options set through the site (i.e. Volcanos, no early 7s, etc.), as well as splitting the chat window into chat and game events, fixing a crash bug, and updating everything to say Cities Online instead of Cities3D.

Here is the new installer: http://www.settlersonline.net/installs/Install_CitiesOnline_v0.9.6.zip

Here are the release notes: Cities Online 0.9.6 Release Notes

Finally, take a look at the How To Play link on the left side of the page.  It has everything you need to know about getting up and going with Cities Online.

I'm getting an error of "This application could not start because the configuration is not correct. Reinstalling the application could solve the problem" whenever I run CitiesOnline manually.  I followed the instructions and downloaded vredist_x86.exe both from this site and the 2005 version from the Microsoft site.  I rebooted each time after installing.  I reinstalled (carefully uninstalling beforehand) the CitiesOnline app as a last resort.

I'm running Firefox 3.0.9 on XP Home SP3.  I had the previous version 0.9.5 running fine.

Ah, I need to update that link to use the 2008 version of the redist.  I upgraded to VS 2008 recently.  Thanks for the tip.  I'll track those down and update the links.

Up and running...that did the trick.  I was surprised you might be using a 2005 version.  That's not your style of developing software.

    I'm getting a message

"The file citiesonline://Telvin_3d:B7E38942F34E243ED16A14EC7BD4378784BAD8C2F7EEF8568C501BAD46344E2E8E0EE9A47DC65D20835978DD418B2B72EE94712B6680178D30F14213CDCEFEE09F8CB0A93142EDDA07D8F0946E39D625350FE4CAE3AB3A9EEBA44048C3E692E2E3EE3F1577FEF85E3E176793D25C34DCA068E0877BD08DAF4504FB56D6F1D6DAD873E6F6AB21C1D5ED7A16BD8C5009D2 cannot be found. Please check the location and try again."

When I click the Launch Cities Online link. I've cleared history/cookies/cache so I'm pretty sure it's not on my end.

Try uninstalling Cities3D and then running the installer again.  The application is now called Cities Online.   The browser might be pointing at the wrong application.

    Question

On the new how to play page you state that the game originated as a German board game.  I was under the impresion that it started as the Dutch boardgame Coloniste Van Catan.

Downloaded the new installer and installed it.  When I open CitiesOnlinefrom the program side it opens wihtou problems.  When I click on Launch Cities Online on this site it says that citiesonline is not a registered protocol.  How do I register the protocol?

Coloniste Van Catan is the Dutch version of the German board game:

I'm looking into the protocol error.  It's part of the installer, but I'm checking now to see if it might have gotten messed up.

The installer definitely has the right section in it.  If you want to track this down, go to your Start menu click Run (if running XP) and then type "regedit".

Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and find the CitiesOnline folder.  It's a massive list but it's sorted alphabetically.  If you click on the CitiesOnline folder, it should have a (Default) entry that says URL:CitiesOnline Protocol with another entry called URL Protocol that has no Data.

Under that should be two folders, one called DefaultIcon which has a (Default) entry that points to your Cities Online install folder.  The other folder should be called shell, which has a subfolder called open, which has a subfolder called command.  In the command subfolder should be a (Default) entry that points to your Cities Online install folder, something like this:

    "C:\Program Files\Cities Online\CitiesOnline.exe" "%1"

Again, it's probably a good idea to uninstall both Cities3D (the old 0.9.5 version) and Cities Online (the new 0.9.6 version) and then run the Cities Online (0.9.6) installer again.

Htanks for clearing up my false impression and sorting the protocol error.  Everything is good again :-)

I re-downloaded everything and re-installed. No problems at all--so far.
